Solving the 5 Most Common Bull Terrier Behavior Problems
From Jumping to Leash Pulling—What Really Works
Bull Terriers are incredible dogs—loyal, smart, and packed with personality. But let’s be honest: they don’t come with an off switch.
If you’re struggling with chewing, leash pulling, or a dog that seems to ignore you half the time, you’re not alone. These are some of the most common issues we see as trainers—and the good news is, they’re fixable.
Here’s how to handle them the Bull Terrier way.
🐾 Problem 1: Jumping on People
Why it happens:
Bull Terriers love people. They get excited—sometimes too excited—and jumping becomes their way of saying “hi.”
Why most people make it worse:
Pushing the dog off, shouting, or giving attention (even negative) often rewards the behavior. The dog learns: “Jumping = interaction.”
What works:
- Teach your dog that four paws on the floor = attention, while jumping = nothing.
- Use a calm “Sit” command at the door. Only pet or greet when they’re sitting.
- Have visitors ignore the dog until they’re calm. Reward the right behavior every time.
✅ Trainer’s Tip: Don’t reward chaos with affection. Calm gets the love. Jumping gets the cold shoulder.
🐾 Problem 2: Leash Pulling
Why it happens:
Bull Terriers are strong and curious. They’re not born knowing how to walk politely—they pull because it gets them where they want to go.
Common mistake:
Using retractable leashes, letting the dog lead, or trying to out-muscle them. Doesn’t work.
What works:
- Use a short, fixed-length leash for training.
- Teach a clear “Heel” position and reward every few steps when your dog walks beside you.
- Start engagement games before the walk to make yourself more interesting than the environment.
✅ Trainer’s Tip: A Bull Terrier that’s focused on you won’t pull ahead. Make walking with you the most rewarding part of the walk.
🐾 Problem 3: Chewing Everything
Why it happens:
Chewing is natural, especially in puppies—but even adults chew when they’re bored, anxious, or under-exercised.
The trap:
Yelling after the fact. If they’ve already chewed the shoe, it’s too late to correct. They don’t connect the punishment with the act.
What works:
- Give your dog tough, durable toys (rotate them to keep interest high).
- Use a crate or “Place” command when you can’t supervise.
- Tire them out with mental work, not just physical exercise.
✅ Trainer’s Tip: Supervise or confine until you’re 100% confident. Freedom is earned with maturity and training.
🐾 Problem 4: Not Listening / “Selective Hearing”
Why it happens:
Bull Terriers aren’t disobedient—they’re independent. If they don’t see the value in responding, they’ll do their own thing.
The problem:
Low motivation, unclear communication, or asking too much too soon.
What works:
- Use high-value rewards—something they actually care about.
- Mark and reward immediately when they respond.
- Go back to basics. Rebuild focus with our B.E.D.F. Method:
Bond → Engagement → Drive → Focus
✅ Trainer’s Tip: Stubborn isn’t the issue. Motivation is. Show them why it matters.

🐾 Problem 5: Zoomies and Overexcitement
Why it happens:
The famous “Bullie tornado” is often just bottled-up energy. But it can also be a sign of stress, overstimulation, or lack of boundaries.
Don’t do this:
Don’t punish zoomies. It’s an outlet. But don’t let them practice it indoors either.
What works:
- Provide structured exercise—not just random play.
- Teach the “Place” command as a calm reset zone.
- Build a daily routine that balances stimulation with rest.
✅ Trainer’s Tip: Zoomies mean it’s time to add structure—not just more running. A calm mind starts with a calm environment.
Final Thoughts: These Are Common—But Not Permanent
Every one of these behaviors is normal—and every one of them can be improved with the right approach.
Bull Terriers aren’t “bad dogs.” They’re energetic, emotional, and sometimes misunderstood. But with positive methods and breed-specific training, you’ll be amazed at how well they respond.
