Signs of trouble include:
Destructive behaviour when left alone
Excessive whining, barking, or howling
Pacing or drooling when you leave
Over-the-top greetings that take forever to calm down
It’s not mischief — it’s panic. And it means they’ve never learned that being alone is okay.
How to Keep the Velcro Cute (and Not Problematic)
1. Teach Independence Early
Don’t always let them follow you everywhere. Practice short moments of separation:
Close the door while you shower
Use a baby gate so they learn to settle in another room
2. Make Alone Time Positive
Give a stuffed Kong, puzzle toy, or chew when you leave. Alone time should = fun time.
3. Avoid Big Hellos/Goodbyes
Keep arrivals and departures calm. No drama, no tears. Normalizing comings and goings helps your dog relax.
4. Use Place Training
Teach them to settle on a bed or mat away from you. It gives them a “job” and helps them feel calm without being glued to your side.

Of course, even with training, expect the occasional bathroom ambush or dramatic sigh when you dare to leave the room.
Because at the end of the day, being your shadow is part of their charm.
