Bull Terrier Puppy Training Tips
Raising a Bull Terrier puppy is an exciting journey filled with challenges and rewards. At Working Bull Terriers Kennel, we’re not just passionate breeders but also dedicated trainers. Our latest litter from Solo x Loopa has been the center of our attention these past months, as we focus on properly socializing and training them to ensure they grow into well-rounded dogs.
Many of you have reached out after seeing our videos, asking for tips on puppy training, socialization, and more. While we’re working on an ebook that dives deeply into these topics, we want to share some practical tips right now for those raising Bull Terrier puppies.

Let’s face it—raising a “Bull Terror” can be demanding. These puppies are full of energy, curiosity, and determination, making them unique compared to other breeds. With patience, consistency, and the right approach, you can help your Bull Terrier thrive.
1. Consistency is Key
When training your puppy, consistency is everything. Establish a routine that works for both you and your pup. This could mean a 10-minute training session every afternoon or splitting it into two shorter sessions—one in the morning and another in the evening.
Having a consistent schedule helps your puppy understand what to expect and when. Puppies thrive on routines, and sticking to one can make training more effective and enjoyable.
2. Focus on What Really Matters
Puppies have a very short attention span, so keep training sessions brief. Focus on teaching commands that are truly valuable, like:
- Follow your hand: This foundational skill makes teaching commands like “place,” “sit,” “down,” and “heel” much easier.
- Come when called: If you can only teach one command, this is it. A strong recall could one day save your dog’s life, such as when they’re chasing a cat toward the street.
- Eye contact: Rewarding your puppy for looking at you builds focus and strengthens your bond.
Avoid wasting your puppy’s limited focus on tricks like “roll over” or “give paw.” While fun, these commands are of no value to a puppy.
3. Keep Training Fun
Training should be enjoyable for both you and your puppy. Use plenty of treats, praise, and positive reinforcement to keep your pup engaged. End every session on a high note with something your puppy loves, whether it’s a quick game of fetch or a short walk.
4. Have Realistic Expectations
It’s easy to dream big when you bring your puppy home, imagining them excelling in agility, protection work, or simply being the perfect family companion. Remember , your puppy doesn’t share those goals yet! All they want to do is play, eat, and sleep.
Puppies need time for their brain to mature. Don’t rush their training. Focus on making obedience enjoyable, and trust that everything will fall into place when the time is right.

5. Avoid Comparisons
Every puppy is unique, even within the same litter. Some puppies learn faster, while others take their time. Comparing your puppy’s progress to others is unfair and unproductive. Instead, focus on their individual journey and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small.
6. Limit Corrections
Corrections should only be used when absolutely necessary—like preventing your puppy from chewing an electrical cable or getting into something dangerous. For most situations, ask yourself if the issue could have been avoided.
For example, if your puppy has an accident indoors, consider whether you took them out for a potty break after crate time. Mistakes are often opportunities to improve your management rather than blame the puppy.
During obedience training, never correct your puppy for not performing a command. Instead, take a break and try again later. Remember, training should always be a positive experience.
Training a Bull Terrier puppy is a big commitment, but it’s one of the best investments you can make for both your future and your dog’s. By creating a strong foundation built on trust, consistency, and fun, you’re setting your puppy up for success.
