Treat or Toy ?

Many dog owners ask which is better to use as reward. The short answer is both. Both treats and toys have their place in dog training.

The important thing is , when to use each type of reward and why.

Always use treats to teach new commands. Because, it is easier to lure a dog with a treat than with a toy. It also makes it easier for the dog to remain focused on his handler and it is the most direct and immediate way to offer reward; which is very important when teaching a command.

About using toys as reward for training, there are rules to be followed.

Use a toy for reward only with a dog that knows the “out” and “fetch” commands. If you have to chase the dog to get the ball back and fight to get him to out the tug, then toys should not be used as reward.

Choose the toy your dog likes the most. If the dog is possessive with his toys, do not use a toy in the presence of other dogs.

In public places with other people and dogs, prefer to use the tug. The tug will keep the dog close to you, contrary to the ball which you have to throw away to play and may disturb others.

Use a toy as reward when your dog has reached a satisfactory training level, to have an extra way to reward and motivate your dog. Use it to make a training session more interesting by offering a different reward and; to achieve faster command performance.
